Zagreb had me so pleasantly surprised that I couldn’t wait to share with you all the cool things to see in this amazing city in just one day. I had never thought of Zagreb as a standalone city to explore, but mainly as a stopover; perfect to fly in and out of the country. We were cruising across Croatia for 2 weeks and by the time we arrived in Zagreb, we were hyped to be spending some time in a bustling city.
We actually spent 2 days in Zagreb, however, all the places that we visited can be easily explored in just a day. Without further ado, here is how you can spend a day in Zagreb.
INTRODUCTION TO THE CITY
It is rather obvious that in order to see everything that Zagreb has to offer in one day, you’ll have to stay at a central location. This way you’ll save time commuting. Also, exploring the city on foot will give you a chance to see more.
We stayed at hotel Esplanade, which was ideally located only 10-minutes from the center.
Public transportation in the city is reliable and cheap. The best way to get around Zagreb is by tram as they have an extensive tram line that can get you anywhere in the city. Uber can also be an alternative to getting around Zagreb but we found their tram service so accessible that we didn’t have to use taxis.
We felt very safe during our short visit to Zagreb, even during the late evening hours. It goes without saying that you should avoid walking in secluded areas and parks at night, especially if you’re alone.
HOW TO SPEND A DAY IN ZAGREB
The center of Zagreb is split into two parts, the Upper Town which is the old town, and the Lower Town. You want to start your day by exploring the old town of Zagreb and the best place to start your walk is Ban Jelačić Square.
Walk towards Tomićeva Street where the famous Zagreb Funicular and Lotrščak Tower are located. The Zagreb Funicular is one of the shortest public transportation funiculars in the world; it can take you from the Lower Town to the Upper Town in less than a minute! From the top, you’ll see Lotrščak Tower which offers some of Zagreb’s best views overlooking the terracotta rooftops.
As you head towards St. Mark’s Square, on your right you’ll find the Museum of Broken Relationships. This may be one of the most unique things to do in Zagreb! The exhibition is dedicated to failed love relationships and its exhibits include personal objects left over from former lovers.
Trivia: In 2011 the museum received an award for Europe’s most innovative museum.
Just a few meters from the museum, you’ll find St. Mark’s Church, one of Zagreb’s oldest buildings and an absolute must-see. The most distinct element of the church is its Gothic architecture and the colorful tiled roof. It sure makes an excellent spot for a nice picture.
Continue towards the Stone Gate and as soon as you pass it, you’ll find yourself at street Ivana Tkalcica, Zagreb’s best foodies hub. The historic street in the city center is surrounded by buildings mainly from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Currently, it houses shops, restaurants, and cafes. This is an ideal location to get acquainted with Zagreb’s vibrant dining culture.
The street has an abundance of restaurants and bars to choose from.
We ate at Otto & Frank and the food was mouthwatering! Greg had the burger and I had the salmon with bulgur wheat, an absolute must-try if you decide to eat there.
DOLAC – THE MOST FAMOUS MARKET IN ZAGREB
I have a weak spot for markets; open-air markets, flower markets, any market for that matter. Even if you’re not a big fan, I would recommend that you at least pass through the Dolac market. This is Zagreb’s central market and it is located behind the main square, near the Cathedral. Here you will find a variety of homegrown fruit and vegetables or homemade cheese, as well as, flowers, butchers, and fishmongers.

Make your way towards Ban Josip Jelacic Square, Zagreb’s central square. Take a minute to admire the beautiful Neo-Classical architecture of the buildings before you move to your next destination, which is no other than the stunning Cathedral of Zagreb. The impressive Gothic architecture of the cathedral makes this, a must-see during your visit to Zagreb!
If you’re after some shopping, then at the street in front of Ban Jelačić Square you’ll be spoiled for choice. The street is lined with many stores so you can shop till you drop. As the sun starts setting down, sit at one of the bars located on the square for a cold beverage and relax while you people watch.
MORE THINGS TO SEE IN A DAY IN ZAGREB
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, Zagreb has a lot to offer, so ideally you spend more than just one day. If you’re looking to venture a little off the limits of the city center, be sure to check out these awesome spots.
- Maksimir Park – Zagreb’s oldest park. If you have kids, then they’ll fall in love with the Zagreb Zoo, located inside the park.
- Arena Shopping Mall – Located next to Arena Zagreb, this shopping mall is a favorite amongst locals and tourists alike.
- Cat Caffe Zagreb – If you love cats, you MUST visit this coffee shop! The owners have adopted several cats who are now permanent “residents” of the cafe. Order one of the unique beverages on the menu and enjoy the most purr-fect company.
