VISIT CASTLE IN BERAT, ALBANIA

Having survived the many years since its construction, the ‘Kalaja’ or castle, was built during the 13th century on top of a large hill within Berat, Albania. The best time to visit is between April to June and September to October when the high summer temperatures haven’t hit yet. A word of warning before venturing up to see it; the hill leading to the castle is quite steep. It is a calf burner but it’s totally worth it as you see spectacular views of Berat from all angles.

Nowadays, the street leading to the castle has been paved and you can also drive up there in case you’re not up for the exercise. The castle has had more than just about every other landmark in this city withstand the test of time. Once at the top, there are several towers and a few remarkable churches to tour which you shouldn’t miss.   • Lili Home-made Food – At this restaurant, you’ll feel as if you’re invited to a local’s house for a hearty meal. It is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in Berat not only because of the fantastic food but also because of the outstanding hospitality.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU VISIT BERAT

  • During the summer months, especially during July and August, it’s best not to visit Berat, Albania because of the high temperatures and lack of rain which can often cause drought conditions.
  • There are very few hotels but plenty of BnB’s to choose from. With that said, it’s best to book in advance if you wish to stay overnight. This way you won’t have to worry about availability or lack thereof, as well we, take advantage of cheap rates. 
  • Berat, Albania is a very safe city, so don’t worry about taking your camera out as tourists, there won’t be any stealing of phones or bags here! 
  • The people are very friendly and will be more than happy to assist with anything that you may need.

HOW TO GET TO BERAT, ALBANIA

You can reach Berat, Albania by bus, fugon (minivans) or by car. Many locals prefer the fugon as it is a little faster and more frequent. With that said, both, buses and fugon are cheap and reliable. 

If you arrive by bus from Tirana or Gjirokaster it will leave you at Berat central bus station. There are taxis waiting outside but you can also catch the local bus which will leave you in the old town.

It is worth noting that the local bus won’t go all the way up to the castle. Therefore, if you have a lot of luggage and you want to avoid the uphill walk, it is best to take a taxi directly from the bus terminal. 

Be sure to have cash with you to pay for your ride as in most places they don’t accept cards. If you take a taxi, negotiate in advance the rate. Taxi meters are almost non-existent in the entire country and so it’s best if you agree on the fare before you enter the cab.
