10 Best Things to Do in Isla Mujeres

We had the best time in Isla Mujeres and I’m here to report back all the reasons why you must visit this beautiful island and the best things to do.

As we were planning our trip to Mexico, we were torn between Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, but as we kept reading more and more about each location, we eventually decided on the latter one, and boy are we glad about our decision!

Playa Norte Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is located a short 30-minute ferry ride from Cancun and it makes the perfect escape if you want to avoid the loud crowds of Cancun. The boho vibe of the island and the mile-long exotic beaches will steal your heart. Be sure to stay at least 2 days in order to enjoy to the fullest all the cool things that Isla Mujeres has to offer and to not miss out on the best things to do.

10 BEST THINGS TO DO IN ISLA MUJERES

Playa Norte

Playa Norte is one of the best beaches in the world! Yes, you heard that right. If someone asked me to close my eyes and describe the ideal exotic beach, I’d imagine a long stretch of powdery white sand beach, lined with palm trees. If you’re like me and that’s your definition of a perfect beach, then waste no time and head to Playa Norte. This amazing beach attracts people from all around the world and so it comes as no surprise that it is one of the best things to do in Isla Mujeres.

Garrafón Reef Park

If you’re visiting with family, Garrafon Reef Park is the ultimate place to spend a day full of fun activities. The Mexican Caribbean is famous for its clear water and abundant reefs so don’t miss your opportunity to go snorkeling and experience the colorful corals and the rich marine life during your visit to Isla Mujeres. The fun doesn’t stop there, you can also do a zip-line, kayak, and even swim with dolphins! I don’t blame you if you think that lazing at the beach or by the pool is the best thing to do, especially at an island such as Isla Mujeres. But, trust me when I say that, you’ll be rewarded with hours of pure fun at Garrafon Reef Park!

The Cave of the Sleeping Sharks

At a depth of roughly 20 meters underwater, lies the cave of the sleeping sharks. This unique diving location offers the chance to get up close and personal with sharks and observe them while they’re asleep. Apparently, sharks can only breathe while in constant motion, however, the bubbles that are created by the underwater springs allow the sharks to breathe without them having to move. Nature is brilliant, right?

Do not hesitate to add this to your list, if you’re looking for the best unique things to do in Isla Mujeres.

Punta Sur

Punta Sur is one of the best places in Isla Mujeres if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the island. My recommendation, make your way there first thing in the morning for a chance to watch the sunrise. A visit to Punta Sur is truly one of the best things to do in Isla Mujeres.

The views are outstanding and there is no doubt that this will be an experience to remember for the years to come!

Isla Brewing Tasting Room

If we’re speaking of the best things to do in Isla Mujeres, then I couldn’t leave out this unique experience. I’m certain that when thinking of Mexico, probably beer is the last thing that comes to mind; think again. There’s nothing better than a cold craft beer to cool down from the summer heat and Isla Brewing Tasting Room is the perfect place for that. The indoor space is unpretentious and cozy and the bartender is simply the kindest. I can’t recommend this place enough.

Restaurant Isla Mujeres

Avenida Miguel Hidalgo

Chances are you’ve already heard about Avenida Miguel Hidalgo, seeing how this is the so-called “downtown” of Isla Mujeres. It is a pedestrian street lined by restaurants and bars and while during the day is bustling with people enjoying a casual drink or lunch, during the night is when it truly comes to life. Avenida Miguel Hidalgo is the hub of Isla Mujeres, offering an abundance of great places to eat, so naturally (if you’re a foodie like me), this is the best place to visit in Isla Mujeres. Whilst there, you simply MUST eat at least once at Los Tacos De Humo and try their famous fish tacos. This is seriously one of the best places to eat in Isla Mujeres! You can thank me later.

Underwater Museum of Art

Holidays to the tropics and scuba diving go hand in hand and Isla Mujeres offers the unique opportunity to experience diving at the Underwater Museum of Art. This is a lifetime experience that you should NOT MISS during your visit to Isla Mujeres; truly the best thing to do during your visit. Art is pretty amazing but when it is underwater, it adds up points to the whole experience, wouldn’t you agree? If you’re looking for unique things to do in Isla Mujeres, then be sure to add this to your list.

Isla Contoy Daytrip

Dreaming of a paradisal escape? Look no further than Isla Contoy. This magical island is located roughly 30-minutes by boat from Isla Mujeres. Expect crystal clear turquoise waters and wild beauty, unlike anything you’ve ever seen. I cannot think of a more amazing thing to do during your visit to Isla Mujeres, than getting to experience a secluded tropical island in the Mexican Caribbean. The island is a protected national park, allowing only 200 visitors per day to visit. Therefore, be sure to plan in advance for your chance of seeing this enchanting tropical heaven.

Rent a Golf Cart

Renting a golf cart is by far the most fun (and safest) way to see Isla Mujeres. The island is not very big but it gets quite crowded. By renting a golf cart you will get to see the island without the hassle of getting stuck in traffic or struggling to find parking space. Most of the golf carts in Isla Mujeres are gas-powered, so you won’t have to worry that you’ll run out of battery soon. Just be sure to confirm that the gas is included in the price (as it should be). To explore Isla Mujeres on a golf cart is one of the top best things to do on the island!

Take a picture at the Rainbow Staircase in Punta Sur

This one is for you my Instagram friends. The rainbow staircase is one of the most Instagrammable locations in Isla Mujeres. How to find it? Just type rainbow staircase on your Google maps and it’ll show exactly where you have to go. This is a fantastic photogenic location to check out if you’re looking to add some color to your Instagram feed.

A FEW MORE UNIQUE THINGS TO DO IN ISLA MUJERES

Isla Mujeres may be a small island but it has no shortage of awesome things to do. Here are a few more amazing things to do in Isla Mujeres.

Stay at the Seashell House – I’m a sucker for cool AirBnb’s and when I travel, I’m always on the lookout and excited to experience a unique stay. If you’re like me, then be sure to check (as far in advance as possible) if there’s a room available at the famous Seashell House. I promise you, a stay there, will be an experience in itself.

Take Yoga Classes – Reconnect with your inner self by taking one of the many yoga classes offered all across the Isla Mujeres.

Admire the murals – The colorful murals are part of Isla Mujeres charm. You will find them everywhere on the island and you’ll catch yourself stopping every so often to photograph them.
