I have visited Istanbul numerous times, mainly because via Istanbul we find the most convenient flights from Malta. I’ve always wanted to explore more of this wonderful city and I finally got my chance to do that, just recently. I was excited to spend an entire day in Istanbul and finally explore the Balat neighborhood!
Chances are, you’ve seen pictures on social media of the vibrant houses of this place. Let me introduce you to one of the most hipster and colorful districts of Istanbul – Balat.
HOW TO SPEND A DAY IN BALAT ISTANBUL
ABOUT BALAT
The neighborhood of Balat was once inhabited by a mixed population of Jews, Muslims, and Christians. That historical element is vividly reflected across the district till today. With the passing of the years, Balat went into a decline and most of the people left the area; something that, unfortunately, led to the neglect of the neighborhood.
That was until UNESCO invested money into restoring historical areas in Istanbul, including Balat.
Nowadays, the area has attracted many artists and there is an increasing number of galleries, bohemian cafes, and restaurants; which is how Balat earned the reputation of being one of the trendiest districts in Istanbul.
HOW TO GET TO BALAT
We used Uber throughout the day to get to the places we wanted to see. We started from Hagia Sophia and the driver dropped us off at Vodina street. When booking your ride, it’s enough if you choose Balat as your destination, your driver will know where to take you.
Balat itself can be explored on foot, therefore if you’re renting a car, it’s best if you park it somewhere before you enter its narrow cobblestone streets.

WHAT TO SEE IN A DAY IN BALAT ISTANBUL
Although the area is not too large, we spent about 4 hours here exploring; taking pictures, chatting with the locals, eating, and drinking. I’ve found the architecture of the buildings fascinating and I fell in love with the relaxed lifestyle of the locals. We recommend this walking tour for your visit to Balat, as a way to learn more about the area. Here are my favorite places to check out when you visit Balat.
MAIN POINTS OF INTEREST
- The colorful houses. Let’s face it, it is the main reason why most people want to visit Balat. The beauty of Balat is unpretentious which is something hard to find in other popular destinations. Despite the fact that most of these colorful buildings could use a renovation, in a way that imperfection makes them even more attractive.
- The Phanar Greek Orthodox College. Adjacent to Balat, you will find the Fener district, an area which in the older years was also known as “Little Greece”. That’s where you will find one of the oldest surviving Greek Orthodox schools in Istanbul. The building is very impressive, with its exterior made up of red bricks it resembles more of a castle than anything else.
- The local stores and charming cafes. Balat has changed rapidly during the last few years and yet, it has managed to maintain a perfect balance between old and new. You can find many interesting things at some of the antique shops dotted across Balat. This will be your chance to find unique memorabilia to add to your souvenir collection.
As you stroll along its narrow cobblestone alleys, you’ll come across a plethora of charming hip cafes with tiny tables located outdoors so you can people-watch as you sip slowly your Turkish coffee. If you’re more of a foodie, fear not, because Balat has also got that covered. Get ready to be spoiled for choice by the numerous bakeries and local restaurants dotted across the entire district. The display windows and the smell of freshly baked goodies will serve as a constant temptation and a reminder that there is no room for diet when in Turkey.
EAT & DRINK IN BALAT ISTANBUL
Vodina Street is the most lively spot in Balat, where most of the cafes and restaurants are located. The rest of the neighborhood expands inland and it is mostly uphill. Once you have explored its picturesque streets, make your way towards the shores and sit at one of the restaurants located between Yildirim Street and Vodina Street to enjoy a hearty meal. Here are 3 places that I strongly recommend.
- Old Balat Cafe & Kitchen – Loved the service and the location. They have a station outside where they can prepare freshly squeezed orange juice. So refreshing and healthy!
- Forno – For the hip interior and the delicious food. Be sure to try the local lentil soup and the lahmacun cooked in their stone oven.
- Tarihi Taş Fırın Evin Unlu Mamulleri – You can’t visit Turkey and not try some of the traditional desserts. At this cute little spot, I had one of the best baklavas to date!

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU VISIT BALAT ISTANBUL
- As mentioned above, for a long period of time Balat had fallen under decline, and only in the last few years has it started to attract tourists. With that being said, don’t expect to find luxurious establishments. Balat is all about tradition, so expect to find locals sitting on their doorsteps chatting, kids riding their bicycles or running around, and overall a very down-to-earth vibe. Embrace it!
- Although there are plenty of touristy restaurants and cafes, the prices are still very decent and the quality of the food is pretty great too.
- Tip is not mandatory in Turkey but it is recommended to leave a little something to your server. It’s good to remember that the salaries here are pretty low and every little extra helps. Their warm hospitality definitely deserves it!
Is Balat Istanbul Worth Visiting?
Absolutely! We loved exploring Balat, taking in the colorful architecture, and eating our weight in local delicacies. This little part of Istanbul is like a kaleidoscope of a vibrant palette and for that, is worth going to Balat.
