Here is how to get to Kefalonia
There are 2 ways to get to Kefalonia, you can catch a flight from Athens International Airport to Kefalonia. We’d suggest that you book your flights far in advance in order to secure a cheap fare. During the busy months of June, July, and August not only the prices skyrocket but also there is limited availability in flights.
Alternatively, you can catch a ferry from Patra to Kefalonia. Many people combine Zakynthos with Kefalonia; as we did. If you’re coming from Zakynthos, there are 2 ways to get to Kefalonia. One is by catching the Levante ferry to Kyllini and from there, another ferry to Kefalonia. The other is to catch the Ionian Pelagos ferry from Agios Nikolaos Port, in Zakynthos to Pessada port in Kefalonia.
ADVICE: Levante ferries are very reliable and a great way to travel between the Ionian islands. Be sure to purchase your ticket in advance from their website, which is downloadable so you won’t have to print them out. The Ionian Pelagos ferries are also a good way to get around but their ferries may be a bit dated. Also, the downside of choosing them is the fact that you can’t buy your ticket online but rather go physically to the port and purchase it.
IS KEFALONIA SAFE?
Like most Greek islands, Kefalonia is very safe. The locals we met on the island were the warmest and the most lovely people we’ve ever met. If we’re being honest, we had the same experience in all the Greek islands that we’ve visited. The locals extend the warmest welcome to all the visitors and appreciate the attention that their island is getting from people around the world. You will encounter nothing but genuine kindness and willingness to help if you need it.
HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED IN KEFALONIA?
Kefalonia is big and the main points of interest are spread across the island. Therefore, our answer to the question “how many days do you need in Kefalonia?” is “five days”; this will allow enough time to fully enjoy everything that this wonderful island has to offer.
When you’re on holiday, the last thing you want is to stress over whether you have enough time to see the main attractions and time to actually kick back and relax. We believe that five days in Kefalonia is the perfect amount of time to explore the must-see locations on the island and also enough time to unwind and enjoy spending hours at the beach, working on your tan.
DO YOU NEED A CAR IN KEFALONIA?
Do you need a car in Kefalonia? We’d say most certainly, yes. Many of the beaches in Kefalonia are remote and not reachable by public transportation, so having a car is almost a necessity. The landscape on the island is extraordinary and you’ll love driving along its winding streets and taking in the scenic views. If you rent a car, it’ll be much easier to explore many of the top things to do in Kefalonia. Be aware, however, a few of them are rather difficult to drive on. Some of the streets get narrow, they are not well lit at night and there are many parts that are serpentine-like causing nausea to those with a weak stomach.
The demand for car rentals is very high, so if you visit during the peak season, our advice is to reserve it in advance. You will find car rental agencies at both ports; Sami and Poros. If you’re arriving in Kefalonia by plane, you’ll be able to rent a car from any of the big car rental companies such as Hertz and Avis which are located at the airport.
The price for car rentals is between 50€ to 60€ per day. Manual cars tend to be a bit more economical. However, automatic cars are limited on the island and they are more costly.

Okay, let’s move to the good part; what are the top attractions to visit in Kefalonia? We’re gonna be honest, we spent a big chunk of our time exploring the island’s stunning beaches. We made sure however to save a few hours each afternoon – when the temperatures would drop a few degrees – to explore the picturesque villages and other parts of the island. Below you will find our favorite things to do in Kefalonia and the most spectacular beaches on the island.
TOP ATTRACTIONS TO VISIT IN KEFALONIA
- Saint Theodore Lighthouse – If you’re in Argostoli, take the scenic route towards the north, where the Saint Theodore Lighthouse is located. The lighthouse itself is located at a beautiful spot, perfect for a quick pit-stop to stretch your legs. What we loved the most, however, was the drive there.
- Drongarati Cave – It is an otherworldly cave dominated by stalactites and stalagmites. The best way to see it is by booking a tour.
- Melissani Cave – A unique cave (it looks like a cenote), with striking crystal clear waters and ethereal beauty. The experience is short (you embark on a small boat which takes you around the cave) but it’s definitely worth visiting. The entrance is 5€ and the best time to visit Melissani Cave is at noon.
- Ainos National Park – If you’re wondering what are some of the best outdoor activities in Kefalonia, then don’t miss out on a fun day of hiking at Aino National Park. Pack a lunch, wear your comfortable shoes and enjoy some time in nature at this wonderful spot with the stunning views.
- Fiskardo – You’ll fall in love with the perfectly reserved Venetian buildings of this remarkable fishing village. Fiskardo is the most picturesque and beautiful village in Kefalonia and a must-see. There are many tavernas, cafes and shops located by the riviera and the nearby beaches are perfect for a quick dip.
BEST TOWNS TO STAY IN KEFALONIA
- Assos Village – This is Kefalonia’s most picturesque village. Be sure to visit during the evening so you can enjoy a nice meal at one of the charming tavernas by the sea. Assos is also one of the best places to eat in Kefalonia!
- Argostoli – The capital of Kefalonia and a great place to stroll around and observe the everyday life of the locals. In Argostoli you will find plenty of shops selling local products such as cheese, honey and olive oil.
- Sami – It is a port town and you can combine it with your visit to Melissani Cave. Also, from Sami you can catch the ferry to mainland (Patra).
- Poros – It is a picturesque town by the port, with great local tavernas located by the sea. Be sure to visit Remetzo Cafe; a beautiful coffee shop built on a cliff, with gorgeous sea views.

- Myrtos Beach – The most famous beach in Kefalonia. For panoramic views, be sure to stop at the view point and enjoy the breathtaking views before you descend down to the beach.
- Makris Gialos – A bustling beach with rows of umbrellas and sunbeds, as well as plenty of watersports to do.
