Top activities in Doi Inthanon National Park
Visit the Wachirathan Falls
While the Wachirathan Falls are not the largest waterfall in Doi Inthanon National Park, they sure are amongst the most impressive ones. The scenery is quite spectacular with the main focal point being the cascading waters of Wachirathan as they weave their way down the rugged mountainside. Take your time to admire the magical scenery before you move on to the next stop on your itinerary. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Also, for photography enthusiasts, it could be beneficial to bring a rain cover for your camera to shield it from the mist generated by the waterfall.
Enjoy the rice fields
Doi Inthanon National Park is covered primarily with forest, however, there are certain parts where the forest gives way to terraced slopes. The rice fields are usually located by the villages and they are a testament to ancient agricultural practices handed down through generations. If you choose to visit the park with a guide, then they will be able to share the story of Doi Inthanon’s rice fields. One that reflects the sustainable and symbiotic relationship between the locals who have been there for generations and their environment. There are certain small paths that you can take through the rice fields, but we’d strongly recommend that you stay within the designated areas so that you avoid damaging the crops.
Visit a hill tribe
This was one of the most exciting experiences during our trip to Doi Inthanon National Park, primarily because it involved interaction with the locals. The communities here have called these verdant hills home for generations and a visit to the local hill tribe will offer you insight into their everyday lives. The people are very friendly and you’ll feel welcomed from the moment you cross paths with them. As part of this experience, you’ll have the opportunity to visit a local coffee roaster house, where you can unwind and savor a cup of coffee crafted from locally grown beans, skillfully roasted by the locals.
Walk along the famous Kew Mae Pan nature trail
The Kew Mae Pan nature trail is an experience not to be missed at Doi Inthanon National Park. The trail offers a breathtaking journey through mist-covered mountains and lush landscapes, all while you encounter a rich variety of flora and fauna, from towering trees draped in moss to vibrant orchids and the hypnotic calls of birds. As you approach the viewpoint, you will be rewarded with panoramic views that’ll take your breath away.
Note that the hike takes approximately 2 hours to complete and there are designated paths and stairs to climb but nothing too strenuous. The temperatures can drop significantly closer to the peak, so we’d strongly suggest that you wear long trousers and bring a warm jacket with you, regardless of the time of year you visit.
Explore the impressive Twin Pagodas
The Twin Pagodas otherwise known as Naphamethinidon and Naphaphonphumisiri, stand side by side, embodying a love story of the Thai monarchy. They are idyllically built atop the highest peak in Thailand, Doi Inthanon National Park, and they pay homage to the revered King Inthawichayanon and Queen Regent Kham Koo. Besides the mesmerizing panoramic views, the pagodas also offer serene gardens which are maintained to perfection.
This makes for a perfect pit stop during your visit to the park, as you can find a restaurant and a coffee shop so you can recharge your batteries before heading to your next destination.
