8 Best Beaches in Zanzibar

Last Updated: December 29, 2023

On the East side of Tanzania, only a short 20-minute flight away, is located the Zanzibar archipelago. Zanzibar is primarily famous for its dazzling beaches with the palm-fringed silvery sands. Zanzibar has plenty to do, so you will need at least 5 days to explore it.

In my previous article about Zanzibar, you will find information on what to do, see and insider tips about this exotic island. On the guide below, you will find extended information about the 8 Best Beaches in Zanzibar; including which are the best for swimming, snorkeling and other water sports.

8 BEST BEACHES IN ZANZIBAR

1. KENDWA BEACH – BEST BEACH FOR SUNSET IN ZANZIBAR

I don’t think I’ve ever watched a sunset that I didn’t like. With that being said, in Kendwa I’ve witnessed some of the most spectacular sunsets during our visit to Zanzibar. Pick a spot at this tropical beach and enjoy a dreamy sunset from the comfort of your hammock. Order your favorite cocktail from one of the beach bars situated close to the beach and relax to the sound of the waves crashing gently on the shore.

2. MNEMBA ISLAND, ZANZIBAR – BEST BEACH FOR SNORKELING

In reality, Mnemba is a private island, therefore access is only allowed to guests of the hotel. Mnemba is one of the most popular locations in Zanzibar for snorkelling and scuba diving and there are several tour guides that can arrange that for you. The reef surrounding the island has been declared a marine conservation area, so expect to find crystal clear waters and hundreds of species of coral reef fish. If you’re luckier than we were, you might even get to see a dolphin!

3. MATEMWE BEACH – BEST BEACH FOR COUPLES IN ZANZIBAR

Here is where our hotel was located, so naturally we got to spend a lot of our time in the area. Matemwe beach is located in a quiet residential area of Zanzibar bordering pretty rural villages. Because of its location, Matemwe does not get much attention from the tourists making it an excellent choice for couples who prefer more secluded beaches. What I also loved about this location is that we had the chance to meet the locals and get to know the culture a little better.

4. PONGWE BEACH – BEST BEACH FOR SWIMMING IN ZANZIBAR

Pongwe Beach is so idyllic, that you will want to spend days lazing on a hammock with a good book and swimming in its calm waters. The palm trees offer a natural shade and the powder white sand creates a paradisal landscape. It is important to note that the sun in Zanzibar is very strong, so be cautious and apply sunscreen frequently. Ideally, one with SPF 50.

5. MUYUNI BEACH – BEST BEACH FOR RELAXATION IN ZANZIBAR

We visited Muyuni beach during our visit to Mnemba island as part of our tour package. Sometimes, having no expectations at all, it’s the best thing and this is exactly what happened in my case and Muyuni. I had researched which were the best beaches in Zanzibar when we were planning our trip, but Muyuni beach was not on my list. So I was caught by a pleasant surprise when we reached its shores. It is a long stretch of unspoiled beach with beautiful turquoise waters and fewer crowds than the rest of Zanzibari beaches. Muyuni beach is the epitome of tranquillity, offering stunning views of the Indian Ocean and Mnemba Island in the distance.

6. PAJE BEACH – BEST BEACH FOR KITESURFING IN ZANZIBAR

Paje beach is located in the south-east of Zanzibar, roughly 40km from Stone Town. It is an exotic wide sandy beach, dotted with swaying palm trees and tranquil emerald waters. Paje is undeniably one of the best beaches in Zanzibar not only for sunbathers but also for kitesurfing and kayaking.

I wasn’t brave enough to try kitesurfing but I did have a go at paddleboarding. It was short-lived, however, as I got reminded once again of my clumsiness and my complete lack of coordination. If you enjoy water sports, you’ll love this place! We decided to spoil ourselves and booked 2 nights at White Sand Villas, in Paje beach and it was the best decision ever! Besides its excellent location, the hotel itself is set amidst exotic trees and lush vegetation creating a heavenly environment, perfect to kick back and unwind.

7. PINGWE BEACH – BEST BEACH FOR DINING IN ZANZIBAR

We left Pingwe for our last day while making our way to the airport. I wasn’t particularly interested in the beach itself, rather than at one of the Zanzibari “landmarks”, which is none other than the famous Rock Restaurant. This iconic restaurant sits on a rock, surrounded by the Indian Ocean which promises an unforgettable dining experience. The Rock Restaurant is one of the most photographed and most famous restaurants on Earth!

8. NUNGWI BEACH – BEST BEACH FOR PARTY IN ZANZIBAR

Nungwi is a magnificent long stretch, sugar-white sandy beach, located at the northernmost tip of Zanzibar. During the day you can enjoy sunbathing and swimming in the shallow waters and as the sun sets, make your way to one of the beach bars for a drink and let the fun begin. Nungwi beach is the ultimate destination if you’re looking to meet fellow travellers and party.

At sunset, it’s one of the most magical sights in Zanzibar!

Stone Town is not popular for its beaches but you can combine a trip to Prison Island and enjoy the small beach located there after your tour. The island was going to be used as a prison for slaves back in the 1860s, however, that plan never came to materialize. Nowadays, countless visitors visit it to see the famous tortoise and snorkel in its clear waters.
