Kandy in a Day: 5 Fantastic Things to Do

Kandy is one of the prettiest towns in Sri Lanka, and it rightfully deserves a spot on your itinerary. It has lovely architecture, great places to eat, and a lot of exciting things to do. It was one of our favorite places in Sri Lanka, and we’re here to share why Kandy deserves a spot on your itinerary!

How to get to Kandy

The best way to get around Kandy and Sri Lanka in general is by booking a private driver. It is the best and easiest way to ensure you see all the places in your itinerary. One more reason why we love this option is that these drivers also act as guides. So they can give you tips about the country and recommendations on where to eat, what to see, and the best things to do in Sri Lanka.

Catching the bus or a train is a cheaper alternative to driving. However, we’re reluctant to recommend these alternatives because their schedules are unreliable. That said, train routes in Sri Lanka are incredibly scenic, so if you’re not in a rush, this is a great option to get to Kandy.

Finally, you could always rent a tuk-tuk and explore the country. We caution you, however, to be extra careful as driving in Sri Lanka is rather dangerous. Locals tend to avoid abiding by the speed limit, and the traffic is hectic!

How to get around Kandy

The best way to get around the city is on foot, but some of the best things to do in Kandy, such as its Botanic Gardens, are not within walking distance. That said, we recommend you take your time and explore it leisurely on your own two feet and ask your driver to drive you to these attractions a bit farther off. Another great option is tuk-tuks; they are cheap and easy to navigate through traffic.

We recommend this walking tour if you want to see and explore the city through the eyes of a local.

There’s no shortage of great places to stay in Kandy. From quaint guest houses to luxury hotels, you will surely find something that strikes your fancy.

We’d recommend that you choose lodging close to the lake, as most of the attractions are within walking distance. Also, the views are incredible, so it’s a win-win!

We stayed at this beautiful hotel, only a few minutes from the lake. We loved the fact that the rooms were squeaky clean and spacious. Also, most rooms offer a spacious balcony to chill after a long day of exploring.

Temple of the Tooth Relic

One of the most popular attractions in Kandy is the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Not only is it a beautiful sight, but it is also one with historic significance for Buddhists around the world, as it is home to the tooth relic of Lord Buddha.

The entrance fee is LKR 1500. Make sure to dress appropriately by covering your knees and shoulders.

Kandy Lake

Kandy Lake is the center of attraction in Kandy, and it is always bustling with people. It’s a perfect place to watch the sunset or take a casual stroll. The entire loop takes about 45 minutes to complete, and it’s all paved, so it’s perfect for walking. We strongly recommend that you visit during the sunset; it’s one of the most romantic spots in the city at this time of the day!

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

We loved exploring the Kandy Botanic Gardens, which span 147 acres and are a pleasant break from the city’s constant buzz. The gardens are home to various plants, palm trees, beautiful flowers, and medicinal herbs.

The cost of the botanical gardens is LKR 3000.

Local Markets and Street Food

Street food, in the literal sense of the word, is not typical in Sri Lanka. The local eateries are so casual that you might as well call them street food. These are the kind of places where we tried some of the best food in the country! If you see a place packed with locals, you know the food is going to be good.

Local markets are also among the best things to do in Kandy. They offer a glimpse into local life and are a great place to buy cheap souvenirs.
