Sri Lanka’s beaches are nothing short of spectacular. The country has an abundance of awesome things to do, and we enjoyed all of them, but we’re beach bums at heart, so exploring its numerous beaches was equally (if not more) fascinating.
If you’re here, you’re probably wondering which beaches are best in Sri Lanka. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite beaches in the country, including where to eat and stay in each town. Also, we’ll share information based on our experience that we think is useful to know.
Here is the list of the best beaches in south Sri Lanka, in our opinion.
1. Mirissa
Mirissa is one of the most popular beaches in the South of Sri Lanka, and rightly so! The town of Mirissa is undoubtedly one of the best options for a mix of relaxation and fun activities. Moreover, Mirissa Beach is perfect for swimming, doing various watersports, and even surfing, although the winds here are not as favorable as in Tangalle. The beach is lined with palm trees and cozy restaurants offering rows of free sunbeds and umbrellas.
On your first day, visit the main beach and head to Secret Beach to watch the sunset. On your second day, explore the other half of the beach, and for stunning sunset views, go to Parrot Beach, an incredibly picturesque location. This Instagrammable spot can get crowded at sunset, but the views are worth it. To avoid crowds, visit early in the morning to enjoy the peace and the cooler temperatures.
Where to eat in Mirissa
No. 1 Dewmini Roti Shop – This restaurant in Mirissa is so well-loved that it’s nearly always bustling with people. If you visit during lunchtime, between 1 – 2 pm, or dinner, between 8 – 9 pm, be prepared to queue. We guarantee, though, that it’s worth the wait. The restaurant is spotless, and the food is incredible! But what will keep you going back, is their rottis. Be sure to try the coconut one! Believe us, you won’t be disappointed!
Where to stay in Mirissa
Peacock Villa – If you’re looking for a place that is clean and quiet, then Peacock Villa is your best choice! It is a short 10-minute walk from the main street and like many guesthouses in Sri Lanka, it is family-owned. The owners were incredibly kind, and the rooms were undoubtedly the cleanest of all the properties we stayed in Sri Lanka. If you book a room with breakfast, make sure to opt for the international breakfast at least once. It offers delicious crepes with coconut and fresh fruits. They were delightful! You might see a monkey or two right outside the restaurant if you’re lucky.
2. Unawatuna Beach
Unawatuna offers a vast stretch of golden sandy beach and a more relaxed atmosphere than Mirissa. Like most beaches in Sri Lanka, you’ll also find various restaurants and bars right on the beach. The town’s lively scene centers around Yaddehimulla Street, brimming with bars, restaurants, and multiple shops. Unawatuna attracts a mix of crowds, from couples and families to solo travelers. Another reason we loved this location is its proximity to Galle, which you can easily visit on a day trip.
Where to eat in Unawatuna
Koha Surf Lounge—We loved this restaurant in Unawatuna! The menu offers a range of healthy bowls, yummy burgers, and seafood. Located just a few meters from the beach, it’s the perfect place for breakfast or lunch. We honestly can’t recommend it enough!
Where to stay in Unawatuna
Ridee Villa – This is a stunning hotel situated right on the main street in Unawatuna. The rooms are beautifully decorated, and there’s even an outdoor pool if you don’t feel like going to the beach. The hotel provides complimentary transportation to nearby beaches like Turtle Beach and one-way trips to Galle (make sure to book it a day in advance)! While there are more affordable options in the area – based on our experience – this place is worth every penny.
3. Bentota Beach
Bentota is much more laid-back than the other beach spots on this list in Sri Lanka. It’s a great, family-friendly, and couple-friendly location with a long stretch of beautiful golden sandy beaches. The water is shallow in many areas, making it ideal for kids and anyone who isn’t as comfortable swimming.

Bamboos Garden Restaurant—This is a great little restaurant right by the train tracks, so you can watch the trains pass by as you enjoy your meal. It is run by a lovely family and serves local dishes such as fried rice, curries, and more.

Cinnamon Bentota Beach – This stunning resort truly won us over! The rooms are flawless, and the service is second to none. Cinnamon Bentota has a rich history dating back to the 1960s, when it was masterfully designed by one of Asia’s most renowned architects, Geoffrey Manning Bawa. This heritage is evident throughout the hotel, creating a cozy and welcoming ambiance. If you want to treat yourself and enjoy a touch of luxury, this is the ideal place.
4. Hikkaduwa Beach
Hikkaduwa Beach is one of the more laid-back options on our list of the best beaches in Sri Lanka, and the same goes for the town itself. This is your spot if you’re after a serene escape with fewer crowds. It’s an excellent place for beginner surfers and divers, offering a perfect chance to pick up a new hobby or hone your existing skills.
Where to eat in Hikkaduwa
Salty Swamis – A fantastic spot for vegans and vegetarians. Every dish is delicious and made with fresh ingredients. The atmosphere has a boho vibe, and the service is quick and friendly. They have a gorgeous garden-like sitting area at the back of the restaurant, as well as indoor seating with a/c if you need a break from the heat. Make sure to check it out when you visit Hikkaduwa—you won’t want to miss it!

Ten30 Hikkaduwa – What we enjoyed the most about this spot was its perfect beachfront location. Every room has an ocean view and comes with a balcony where you can unwind and soak in the breathtaking scenery.
5. Tangalle Beach
Tangalle is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka for experienced surfers and those looking to take surfing lessons. However, beware if you’re not a skilled swimmer, as it can often be risky due to the consistently strong waves. That said, there are a few rock-protected areas where swimming is safer. Along the beach are a few bars and restaurants providing free sunbeds. Closer to Tangalle town, the beach becomes more lively and has a variety of amenities.
Where to eat in Tangalle
Ceylon Excel – It is tucked away in a small street in Tangalle, and due to its location, you might easily bypass it. But this welcoming restaurant is worth your attention! This quaint restaurant offers fresh food, exceptional service, and a cozy atmosphere. Need we say more?
