Welcome to Naxos, a captivating Greek island that is about to sweep you off your feet! We usually do extensive research before we visit a new destination but this time, we wanted to maintain the element of surprise, so we went to Naxos completely unprepared. The Greek islands are like a second home to us, so it was easy to do that, but I wouldn’t recommend it for destinations that are completely new to you.
Admittedly Naxos is not one of the most famous Greek islands. Don’t underestimate it though. This beautiful island offers breathtaking landscapes, ancient wonders, and unforgettable experiences.
But that’s not all! Naxos isn’t just another run-of-the-mill tourist destination. It’s a place where traditional Greek charm meets modern indulgence. From the labyrinthine streets of Naxos Town (Chora) to the remote corners of rural villages, every step you take will unveil a unique story and a new adventure.
Pristine sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters, quaint villages adorned with charming whitewashed houses, and a captivating blend of ancient history and vibrant culture. Naxos has it all!

HOW TO SPEND 5 DAYS IN NAXOS: THE PERFECT ITINERARY
Day 1: Discovering Naxos Town (Chora)
Kickstart your Naxos adventure by immersing yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Naxos Town, also known as Chora. Start your day with a stroll along the picturesque harbor, admiring the traditional fishing boats. Visit the impressive Portara, an ancient marble gate that stands proudly at the entrance of the port, offering stunning panoramic views of the town. This landmark is the crowning jewel of Naxos, so you don’t want to miss it.
Next, Indulge in a delectable lunch at a local taverna, savoring traditional Greek dishes like moussaka and souvlaki. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the labyrinthine streets of the Old Town. Here you’ll come across charming shops, Byzantine churches, and quaint cafés. Don’t forget to visit the Archaeological Museum to learn about Naxos’ rich history.
NOTE: The museum is currently being renovated. However, there is a temporary small exhibition area with a few interesting historical artifacts. Although this is just a fragment of the museum, I highly recommend that you visit it and get a hint of Naxos’ interesting history.
The temporary exhibition is open daily from 9 am to 2 pm and the entrance is free. All museums & archeological sites are closed on Tuesdays.
If you’re looking for a more unique and personalized experience, then we recommend taking a walking tour of Naxos Old Town. With a knowledgeable guide leading the way, you’ll discover hidden alleyways, stumble upon charming little shops, and hear fascinating stories that bring the town to life. You’ll find that this is more than just a regular stroll—it’s an immersive journey through time, where you’ll feel the heartbeat of Naxos and fall in love with its undeniable charm.
Day 2: Beach Bliss and Temple Trekking
On your second day, embark on a beach-hopping adventure along the island’s stunning coastline. Start with Agios Prokopios, a sandy paradise with crystal-clear turquoise waters. This was by far one of our favorite beaches in Naxos and a must on your 5 days in Naxos itinerary. Take a refreshing dip, bask in the sun, or try your hand at thrilling water sports. Next, head to Plaka Beach, known for its pristine beauty and peaceful ambiance. Walk along the soft white sand, enjoying the breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. As the sun begins to set, make your way to the ancient site of Apollo’s Temple at Portara. Witness the magical hues of the sky as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the temple ruins.
NOTE: Most beaches in Naxos are well-organized, providing sunbeds, umbrellas, food, and drink services. The cost of umbrellas varies between 10 and 20 euros for the entire day, while all drinks and food are available at an additional cost. If you are on a budget and prefer to lay your towel on the sand, there are also several sections of the beach where you can do that.
Day 3: Exploring Naxos’ Inland Treasures
Next up on your 5 days in Naxos itinerary, escape the bustling tourist areas and experience the rustic beauty of rural Naxos. Begin your day by visiting the charming village of Apeiranthos, nestled amidst the mountains. Stroll through its narrow streets, marvel at the whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant flowers, and soak in the tranquil atmosphere. Enjoy a hearty breakfast at a local kafeneio, where you can savor freshly baked bread, local cheeses, and aromatic Greek coffee.
Afterward, head over to the traditional village of Filoti, nestled at the foot of Mount Zas. As you wind your way through the scenic countryside, you’ll be captivated by the village’s undeniable charm. Filoti offers a true taste of traditional Greek village life, with friendly locals, cozy tavernas serving delectable homemade dishes, and a warm atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.
Conclude your day at the enchanting village of Halki, renowned for its Venetian architecture and quaint ambiance. Visit the Vallindras Distillery and sample locally produced olive oil and citrus sweets. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn about the island’s renowned liqueur, Kitron, through a guided tour and tasting. It’s an exceptional experience that should not be overlooked!
Halki is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious late lunch as you celebrate a full day of exploration and discovery. Head to its picturesque plateia, the Greek term for the main square, where all the action happens. Giannis Tavern is possibly one of the best places to eat in Chalki, perfect for meat lovers, though, like most Greek tavernas, you’ll find plenty of vegetarian options too. Stuffed vine leaves, Greek salad, and Dakos are our favorite go-to dishes when we’re looking for a light bite to eat that doesn’t involve meat.

Day 4: Island Hopping – Explore the Nearby Island of Koufonissia
The close proximity of Koufonissia to Naxos makes it an ideal destination for a daily cruise. You will find numerous tour agencies throughout the island that offer daily trips to Koufonissia from Naxos. However, we highly recommend planning ahead and booking your tour as soon as possible to avoid any unpleasant surprises, such as overcrowded boats that rush you from point A to point B.

Best day trip during your 5 days in Naxos – Koufonissia Island
First things first, let’s talk about the best way to explore these stunning islands. Koufonissia is relatively small, which makes it perfect for leisurely strolls. Take your time to wander around the charming streets, breathe in the salty sea air, and soak up the island vibes. Remember, there’s no rush here – it’s all about embracing the laid-back island life.
As for what to pack, keep it simple. Bring along your beach essentials: swimsuit, sunscreen (a must!), and a towel. Trust me, you won’t be able to resist the crystal-clear turquoise waters that beckon you to take a refreshing dip. Don’t forget your camera or phone to capture those picture-perfect moments. Koufonissia’s breathtaking landscapes are definitely Instagram-worthy!
Now, let’s talk about the main attractions. Head over to Pori Beach, a slice of paradise that’ll leave you in awe. The powdery sand, complemented by the vibrant blue hues of the sea, creates a postcard-worthy scene. Take a dip in the inviting waters or simply relax on the beach, soaking up the sun. It’s pure bliss!
For some cultural exploration, make your way to Chora, the main village of Koufonissia. Marvel at the traditional Cycladic architecture, with its picturesque white-washed houses and charming narrow streets. You’ll find quaint little shops, inviting cafes, and tavernas offering mouthwatering Greek delicacies. Treat yourself to a refreshing frappe (iced coffee) or indulge in a delicious local dish – you won’t be disappointed!
Make sure you keep an eye on the time and plan accordingly, as you’ll want to make it back to Naxos in time for the return cruise.
Day 5: Delving into Nature’s Wonderland
On your final day in Naxos, immerse yourself in the island’s natural wonders. Start with a visit to the jaw-droppingly beautiful Cave of Zas, a fascinating geological formation shrouded in mythology. Explore its hidden chambers and marvel at the mesmerizing stalactites and stalagmites. Next, head to the picturesque village of Apollonas, known for its colossal marble statue of Kouros, an unfinished ancient artifact. Enjoy a leisurely seaside lunch at a waterfront taverna, savoring freshly caught seafood. Conclude your Naxos adventure by taking a dip at the secluded and idyllic beach of Moutsouna, relishing the tranquil beauty of the island. The beach is very small but perfect for a quick dip before you head back to your hotel.
