We spent three glorious days on Ios Island, surrounded by azure waters, golden sandy beaches, and a vibrant atmosphere that swept us off our feet. It’s time for us to spill the beans and share all the reasons why this Greek island deserves a top spot on your travel bucket list.
Over the past couple of years, we have been on an exhilarating mission to uncover the hidden gems of this mesmerizing Mediterranean paradise. Last year, we were spellbound by the enchanting Ionian islands, particularly the breathtaking beauty of Zakynthos and Kefalonia. But this year, we decided to embark on a brand new adventure and set our sights on the captivating wonders of Naxos and Ios Island!
From the finest beaches and mouthwatering local delicacies to exhilarating activities and hidden gems, we’ve curated a delightful itinerary that will leave you yearning for more. So, without further ado, here is how to see Ios Island in 3 days. Let the adventure begin!
Day 1: Ios Island Exploration
Morning
Start your day with a hearty breakfast to fuel your energy. Head to Chora, the vibrant capital of Ios island. You’ll find yourself surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colors, as bougainvillea blooms cascade from balconies and the picturesque whitewashed houses create a postcard-perfect backdrop. Lose yourself in the maze-like streets, and of course, don’t forget to unleash your inner photographer and capture those envy-inducing Instagram shots!
Chora is so mesmerizing, you might just lose track of time exploring its charming streets. But, we can’t overlook the absolutely essential meal of the day: breakfast! Lucky for you, Chora is overflowing with amazing food joints. We’ve done the hard work and narrowed it down to the crème de la crème, the top three places to grab a killer breakfast!
Piccolo Ios Cafe – This is the kind of place that instantly makes you feel at home with its cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. True, their iced coffees are an absolute game-changer, but they also whip up a breakfast that’ll knock your socks off. From fluffy pancakes to delicious avocado on toast and mouth-watering omelets, their menu has something for everyone.
Insider tip: make sure to grab a seat on their lovely terrace. Not only will you be treated to stunning views of Chora, but it’s also the perfect spot to relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy your delightful treats.
Bakehouse – A cozy little haven filled with the mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked goodies. From flaky croissants that melt in your mouth to heavenly cinnamon rolls oozing with gooey goodness, every bite is pure magic.
Pro tip: Arrive early to beat the crowds and snag a seat outside, so you can people-watch while savoring your scrumptious pastries.
Agora Cafe – The moment you step inside, you’ll be greeted with the delightful aroma of freshly brewed coffee. But here’s the insider tip: their homemade desserts are pure bliss. Indulge in decadent chocolate cakes and tangy lemon tarts – Agora Cafe knows exactly how to satisfy your sweet tooth. Don’t forget to pair your dessert with a steaming cup of their specialty coffee. Trust me, it’s a match made in heaven. You won’t regret it!
Noon
It’s time to hit the beach! Grab your towel and sunscreen, and make your way to Mylopotas Beach. Feel the soft sand between your toes as you bask in the warm Greek sun. Take a dip in the crystal-clear turquoise waters and try your hand at exciting water sports. You’ll find a variety of watersports to choose from such as paddleboarding, scuba diving, and jet skiing.
A large section of the beach is covered with sunbeds, each belonging to a different restaurant/bar. Please note that there is typically a fee of around 10 – 20€ to use them, and payment can be made either by card or in cash.

Afternoon
For your chance to learn more about the island’s history, visit the Archaeological Museum of Ios in Chora. Marvel at ancient artifacts and learn about the island’s rich past. You’ll feel like a time traveler exploring hidden treasures! Though small in size, the museum showcases a curated collection of artifacts dating back to various periods, including the Cycladic, and Roman eras. Discover ancient pottery, sculptures, tools, and other archaeological finds that provide valuable insights into the island’s past.
The museum is conveniently located in Chora, the main town of Ios Island. You can easily access it on foot, as it is situated iclose toother attractions and amenities.
The Archaeological Museum of Ios Island is open every day except Tuesday, from 08:30 – 15:30 and the entrance fee is 4€.
Evening
As the sun begins to set, make your way to the hilltop village of Paleokastro. Get ready for jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the neighboring islands. Paleokastro, translated as “old castle” in English, is a Byzantine fortress situated on the Eastern side of Ios Island, along the route connecting Agia Theodoti and Psathi. When driving towards Psathi, keep an eye out for a small sign indicating Paleokastro on the left side of the road. This is one of the best places on Ios Island to watch the sunset!
Day 2: Adventure Time on Ios Island!
Morning
Get an early start and catch a boat to explore the neighboring island of Sikinos. Sikinos is ahe closest island, and the ferry ride is super quick, just around half an hour.
Keep in mind that ferry schedules and operators can change each year. For stress-free ticket booking, I highly recommend using the Ferryhopper website. It’s fantastic because you can check out all the different departures for any dates you have in mind. Plus, booking your ferry tickets to Sikinos online is the easiest way.
Evening
We’re sure that a full day of exploration will open up your appetite! Treat yourself to a well-deserved seafood feast at one of the seaside tavernas in the picturesque harbor of Ormos. Indulge in fresh catch-of-the-day dishes while savoring the idyllic atmosphere. The Greek cuisine will leave your taste buds dancing with joy!
Day 3: Take it easy!
Morning
Start your day with a relaxed morning by sipping your coffee and savoring a delicious breakfast at one of the many cozy cafes in Chora.
Noon
It’s time for some beach-hopping! On your last day on Ios Island, we recommend heading to the northern coast to explore the beautiful Koumpara Beach. While most tourists prefer Mylopotas Beach due to its proximity to Chora and lively atmosphere, Koumpara Beach offers a great alternative if you’re looking for a quieter beach away from the crowds.
However, keep in mind that there is a beach club right by Koumpara Beach, open from 11:00 to 20:00, and the music can be a bit loud, especially in the late afternoon until closing. Nevertheless, if you choose sunbeds farthest from the beach club, the music won’t be a bother at all.
Where to eat at Koumpara Beach
Due to its secluded location, there aren’t many options available. However, within a short 5-minute walk from the beach, you’ll find Polydoros Restaurant. This is by far the best restaurant we experienced on Ios Island! It is a family-run restaurant, serving delicious homemade food with exceptional service. Bonus point: the prices are much more reasonable compared to the ones found in tavernas in Chora.
We enjoyed our experience so much that we visited twice during our stay on Ios Island!

Afternoon
Are you up for an adrenaline rush? Explore the island’s hidden gems by renting an ATV or a scooter. Feel the wind in your hair as you navigate the winding roads, discovering charming villages and secret coves along the way. This is undeniably one of the most fun ways to get around Ios Island. Remember to drive safely and wear a helmet!
Helpful information about renting an ATV
- You will need a valid license to rent an ATV or a scooter
- Most rental agencies prefer to avoid daily rentals, which is why the price is usually slightly higher when you rent for just one day. We would recommend that you rent your vehicle for at least 2 days.
- Ios Island is quite small, and car rental agencies often sell out during the busy summer months. Ensure to rent your vehicle as soon as you arrive on the island. Unfortunately, their websites are not very advanced, and they typically don’t provide the option for online reservations.
Evening
Wrap up your unforgettable Ios adventure with a vibrant night out in Chora. Experience the island’s famous nightlife by hopping from one bar to another, dancing under the starry sky. Make friends with fellow travelers and create memories that will last a lifetime!
How to get around Ios island
Bus – Buses on Ios Island are very accessible and super cheap. They can take you to all the awesome tourist spots on Ios island, plus some hidden gems like Magganari and Agia Theodoti beaches. You can buy your bus tickets either from the kiosk at the main bus station in Chora, located right in front of the main square. Alternatively, you can purchase it directly from the driver.
NOTE: Make sure you have cash with you if you opt to buy the ticket from the driver.
Car – it comes without saying that the most convenient way to explore a destination is by car, as it offers both comfort and convenience. As we mentioned above, there is usually a lack of availability during the busy summer months, so we’d highly recommend that you reserve your car as soon as you arrive on the island. You might want to ask your hotel concierge to help you with that.
Walking – Ios is compact and perfect for strolling around. Many attractions are within walking distance in Chora, the main town, and nearby areas. While it’s easy to rely on your own two legs for exploring short distances, we wouldn’t recommend it for longer distances where there’s a lack of proper sidewalks. Also, Greek summers can get pretty hot so you should avoid walking between noon and 4 pm.
Biking – Rent a bike or a scooter to discover the island at your own pace. It’s a popular choice and allows you to access beautiful spots easily.
