We’ve traveled to many places in Provence, but few have left such a lasting impression as Gordes. The Luberon Valley is full of beautiful villages, but only one is so iconic that it has earned the nickname “the jewel of Provence.” If you’re planning a trip to the south of France, this is a destination that should be at the very top of your list.
In this travel guide, we’ll go beyond the postcards to give you an insider’s look at what makes Gordes so special, along with tips to make planning your trip seamless. Without further ado, let’s dive into your ultimate guide to Gordes, France!

Your First Glimpse of Gordes, France
Your first memory of Gordes, France, should be from a specific spot. Before you even enter the village, stop at the famous Gordes viewpoint on the D15 road. Located on a gentle curve of the road as you approach from Cavaillon, this is where you’ll get the iconic, postcard-perfect shot. The sight of the village clinging to the hillside, with the Luberon mountains as a backdrop, is simply breathtaking. We still remember the first time I saw it! The best time for photos is at sunset when the stone buildings are bathed in a soft, golden light.

Best Things to Do in Gordes, France
Once you’ve taken in the view, it’s time to venture into the village itself. The streets are steep, narrow, and winding, making comfortable walking shoes a must. Gordes is an ideal place to explore at a slow pace, so do not rush.
The Château de Gordes
Right in the heart of the village sits the grand Château de Gordes. It was first built in the 11th century and then updated in the 16th century, so it stands as a clear reminder of the village’s long history. The castle has a powerful mix of a strong medieval fortress and a more elegant Renaissance palace. Today, it’s open to the public as a museum and hosts different art shows. While the inside is interesting, the impressive look of the castle from the outside is what truly makes the main square so special.

The Church of Saint-Firmin
Adjacent to the castle, the Church of Saint-Firmin is another beautiful landmark. Its elegant architecture is a peaceful contrast to the castle’s strength. Take a moment to step inside and admire the quiet interior.

The Caves of the Palais Saint-Firmin
This is one of the true hidden gems of Gordes, France. Tucked away beneath the village, these underground cellars are a fascinating piece of history that many visitors miss. The caves, carved out of rock centuries ago, were used by artisans for various trades. On a guided tour, you can see how villagers used to produce olive oil and other goods in this hidden world. It’s a great way to escape the heat and see a different side of the village’s past.

Explore the Village
The best way to explore Gordes is without a plan. Just wander. Every turn reveals a new view, a charming alleyway, or a small shop selling local goods. You’ll find art galleries, boutique shops, and local cafés hidden in every nook. The village has a great sense of community, and you’ll often see locals going about their day, which adds to the authentic charm.

Tips for Visiting Gordes, France
Parking
Parking in Gordes can be a challenge, especially on busy days. There is a large, paid parking lot at the top of the village, near the Château. Our advice is to arrive early, especially if you’re visiting during the summer or on a Tuesday (market day). Arriving before 10 AM can save you a lot of hassle. If that lot is full, there are a few smaller parking areas further down the hill, but they fill up quickly.

Getting Around
The village is built on a steep slope, so be prepared for a workout. The streets are not designed for cars, so walking is the only way to explore the heart of Gordes.

Market Day
Tuesday is market day in Gordes, and it’s a fantastic experience. The square comes alive with stalls selling local produce, cheeses, honey, olives, and crafts. The atmosphere is vibrant and a true reflection of Provençal life. Just be aware that the village will be much more crowded, and parking will be even more difficult. If you want to experience the market, plan to arrive very early.

Beyond the Village: Must-See Sights Near Gordes
While the village itself is stunning, the surrounding area is home to some of the most famous sights in Provence. A trip to Gordes, France, isn’t complete without visiting these nearby gems.
Roussillon
Just a short drive from Gordes is the village of Roussillon, a place that seems to rise from the ground in a burst of fiery color. Known for its rich ochre deposits, the entire village is painted in shades of red, orange, and gold, making for a truly spectacular sight. The main attraction is the Sentier des Ocres, a walking trail through the old ochre quarries. It might be worth exploring this tour and combining a visit to both villages. If you’re on a tight schedule, then we’d recommend that you simply explore the village and wander its colourful streets.

Lacoste
If you’re looking for a quieter, more artistic experience, head to the small village of Lacoste. Perched on a hill with a grand castle overlooking the valley, Lacoste has a rugged beauty and a creative atmosphere thanks to its connection to art schools. It’s a place to simply wander its quiet, narrow streets and soak in the peaceful views of the countryside and the village of Bonnieux across the valley. It offers a more tranquil contrast to the busier Gordes.

Where to Eat and Stay in Gordes
Gordes has a range of dining options, from small, family-run restaurants to high-end, luxury dining. If your budget allows, we highly recommend treating yourself to a fine dining experience here. We found that the best experiences often came from the smaller places tucked away on side streets. Look for a restaurant with a terrace for a meal with a view. Many of the restaurants serve classic Provençal dishes like lamb, truffles, and fresh produce.
For accommodations, you have everything from charming bed and breakfasts to world-class luxury hotels. Staying in the village allows you to experience its peaceful atmosphere in the early morning and late evening, after the day-trippers have left. We kind of regretted not staying overnight, as it would have given us a chance to experience the village without the crowds and see how it looks at night.
