When you picture a perfect Italian escape, the images that come to mind are likely of Lake Como. It’s a place where the impressive Alps meet the tranquil waters of a deep-blue lake, and where elegant villas and vibrant villages dot the shoreline. While photos hint at its beauty, the reality of Lake Como is something you have to experience to believe.
We’ve been fortunate enough to visit this stunning region, and we can’t recommend it enough! While the famous towns like Bellagio are absolutely worth seeing, there’s also true magic to be found in exploring the less-traveled paths.
In this guide, we’ll share some of the most popular things to do in Lake Como, along with some practical tips and lesser-known spots that will make your trip truly unforgettable.

Getting to Lake Como and Getting Around
Before we dive into the villages, let’s talk logistics. Getting to Lake Como is surprisingly easy. The most common way is to fly into Milan and take a train. The train from Milan to Como San Giovanni is fast, direct, and drops you right near the lake.

Once you’re there, the best and most beautiful way to get around is by ferry. We’d suggest you forget the idea of driving; the roads are narrow, winding, and parking is a nightmare. The ferry system, on the other hand, is a joy. There are a few different types, from slow ferries that stop at every village to faster hydrofoils. Our advice? Don’t rush it. The slow ferry is an experience in itself, offering incredible views of the villas and towns along the shore. Grab a seat on the top deck, feel the breeze, and enjoy the scenery. We snapped some of our best pictures of the colorful buildings from the ferry!
Insider Tip: While most people head for the famous “Golden Triangle” (Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio), consider a less crowded base like Varenna or a quieter spot nearby. This can give you a more authentic feel and help you avoid some of the biggest crowds.

Things to Do in Lake Como: Visit Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio
These three villages are the heart of Lake Como, and for good reason. They are connected by a convenient ferry service, making it easy to hop between them. If you only have a day or two, this is where you’ll want to focus your energy.
Bellagio
Known as the “Pearl of the Lake,” Bellagio is arguably the most famous village and one of the top things to do in Lake Como. It’s stunning from every angle. The village is built on a promontory where the lake splits into its two southern branches.
What to do in Bellagio:
- Wander the cobblestone streets: The iconic Salita Serbelloni is a must-see. This steep, narrow alleyway is lined with colorful shops and restaurants, and it’s perfect for a photo.
- Visit the gardens: Don’t miss the beautiful gardens of Villa Melzi. While you can’t go inside the villa, the lakeside gardens are a peaceful labyrinth of plants, statues, and serene walking paths.
- Have a gelato: After wandering the steep streets, there’s no better way to recharge than with a classic Italian treat. You’ll find plenty of fantastic gelaterias tucked away in Bellagio’s alleys. Grab a scoop of your favorite flavor (or try a new one) and find a bench to sit on and enjoy the simple pleasure of authentic gelato while you take in the sights.
Insider Tip: Bellagio can get very crowded, especially in the afternoon. If you’re staying overnight, take a walk in the early morning or late evening. The village is completely different; quiet, magical, and all yours.

Varenna
On the eastern side of the lake, directly across from Bellagio, is our personal favorite village, Varenna. It’s quieter and less touristy than Bellagio, but every bit as beautiful.
What to do in Varenna:
- The Lover’s Walk (Passeggiata degli Innamorati): This romantic, iron-wrought walkway hugs the lake and connects the ferry terminal to the main square. The views of the colorful homes and the lake are simply stunning.
- Villas and gardens: Varenna is home to two incredible villas with gardens. Villa Cipressi is known for its terraced gardens that cascade down to the water, offering a mix of history and botany. Villa Monastero is another masterpiece, a former convent with a museum and one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Italy.
- Castello di Vezio: For the best panoramic view of the central lake, hike up to Castello di Vezio. This medieval castle ruin offers a breathtaking vista and is a wonderful way to work off some of that delicious Italian food.
Insider Tip: The hike up to the castle is a bit steep but well worth the effort. Go in the late afternoon to catch the golden hour light hitting the mountains.

Menaggio
On the western shore, Menaggio offers a different, more laid-back vibe. It’s a great base for exploring and is particularly popular with families and hikers.
What to do in Menaggio:
- The Lakeside Promenade: Menaggio has one of the most beautiful and peaceful promenades on the lake. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll, with manicured flower beds and benches to stop and admire the view.
- Piazza Garibaldi: The heart of the town, this square is a lively spot filled with cafes, restaurants, and gelaterias. It’s the perfect place to grab a drink and watch the world go by.
- Lunch in town: If you have time, settle in for a leisurely lunch and savor authentic Italian dishes at one of the many restaurants located in the town.
Insider Tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a kayak or a small boat from Menaggio. Seeing the famous villas and towns from the water gives you a whole new perspective.

Beyond the Famous Three: Discovering a Hidden Gem
While the “Golden Triangle” is a must-do, exploring beyond it can lead to some incredible discoveries. One village that often goes overlooked but offers a truly authentic experience is Moltrasio.
Moltrasio
Located on the western shore just north of Como town, Moltrasio is a peaceful, beautiful village that feels a world away from the tourist crowds. It’s a place where you can get a real sense of local life.
What to do in Moltrasio:
- Lakeside Walkways: Moltrasio has a lovely, quiet promenade where you can enjoy the stunning views without the crowds. The village is also known for its steep, stone stairways that climb the hillside.
- Villa Passalacqua: While this stunning 18th-century villa is now a private hotel, its beautiful facade and lakeside gardens can be admired from the water. It’s one of the most elegant villas on the lake.
- Hidden Waterfalls: Moltrasio is a fantastic base for hikers. The surrounding hills are full of scenic trails, some of which lead to hidden waterfalls and give you panoramic views of the lake and the Swiss Alps.
Insider Tip: If you’re staying in Moltrasio, find a local “crotto”, a traditional stone cellar restaurant. These cozy, rustic spots are known for serving authentic local food, like the famous missoltini (dried fish) and creamy polenta uncia. We’re literally drooling as we’re writing this!

What to Eat in Lake Como
The food in the Lake Como region is simple, rustic, and absolutely delicious. Don’t leave without trying:
- Risotto con Filetti di Pesce Persico: A creamy risotto with fresh perch from the lake. It’s a local specialty you’ll find on most menus.
- Polenta: A staple of northern Italy, polenta is a versatile cornmeal dish served with everything from cheese to braised meats.
- Missoltini: A unique local dish of salted and sun-dried shad, often grilled and served with polenta. It has a strong, unique flavor.

A Final Thought on Things to Do in Lake Como
Lake Como is a place that invites you to slow down. Don’t try to see everything. Pick a few places, wander, and let yourself get lost. The best memories you’ll make will likely be the unplanned ones: a quiet coffee in a small square, an evening aperitivo with a view of the sunset, or a peaceful ferry ride across the sparkling water.
