Summer has long gone and while most are enjoying warm pumpkins lattes, you’re Googling which European countries to visit in October. I feel you, I’ve been there! Below you will find a list of the best European countries to visit in October depending on what type of holiday you’re after.
Some of the destinations below offer warm temperatures and even the possibility of spending a few days by the beach. The rest of the destinations, are perfect if you’re looking for a city to experience fall foliage. That’s right, Europe has it all and you’ll have no problem finding the right place for your holiday.
BEST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES TO VISIT IN OCTOBER FOR WINTER SUN
CRETE, GREECE
I grew up in Crete, so trust me when I say, this beautiful island is a great choice for holiday any time of the year. Due to its large size and diverse terrain, Crete combines beaches, mountains, lakes, and beautiful nature to explore. In October the temperatures fluctuate depending on which side of the island you’re at. In the South, the temperatures are at an average of 24 degrees during the first half of October and in the second half, they can go no less than 16 degrees. Whereas, the temperatures change drastically when visiting Crete’s mountainous areas in October. For example, in Psiloritis, which is the highest mountain in Crete, the higher temperatures in October are 12 degrees and the lowest can be 0.
CYPRUS
The weather in Cyprus during October is still very warm with an average of 26 degrees, making this one of the best European countries to visit during this month. Cyprus is busy in October without being overwhelmed by crowds. If you’re looking for a European destination to enjoy a few days by the beach, soaking up the Mediterranean sun, then Cyprus is a safe bet. Don’t miss out on Cape Greco sea caves and Lefkara, one of the most beautiful villages in Cyprus.
MALTA
We lived in Malta for almost 6 years and I don’t think I experience a proper winter during any of those years. Malta offers over 300 days of sunshine per year, need I say more? The island is located between Sicily and Tunisia which is why it benefits from great weather all year round. October is one of the best months to visit Malta as you can still enjoy the beaches and the summer activities, without the excessive crowds and in more pleasant temperatures. The average temperature during the day is 25 degrees and during the night is no less than 18 degrees. The best beaches in Malta to check out are St. Peter’s Pool and Tuffieha.

SICILY
Very similar to Malta, Sicily’s location is one of the reasons why the warmer temperatures last well into October. Sicily is steeped in history and can offer some of the best beaches in Italy and October may as well be one of the best months to visit. The average temperature is 24 degrees and the seawater temperature is 22 degrees, so you will have a blast swimming in its crystal clear waters. If you decide to visit Sicily, be sure to check out Taormina, one of Sicily’s most picturesque towns.
MALLORCA, SPAIN
Mallorca is one of the most popular Spanish islands and offers exceptional beaches and wonderful landscape that takes your breath away. What’s more, October is a great month to explore it due to the mild temperatures. The average is 21 degrees but during the end of October it can go as low as 16 degrees, so if you’re looking to spend most of your time at the beach, then it is best if you visit during the first half of the month. Although its beaches are wonderful, be sure to split your time between that and exploring the more rugged part of the island such as the World Heritage Site of Serra de Tramuntana.
BEST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES TO VISIT IN OCTOBER AND EXPERIENCE FALL FOLIAGE
ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA
I know what you’re thinking, that Russia will probably be extremely cold during this month. That might be the case for the easternmost parts of the country but October is a great month to visit St. Petersburg. The fall foliage is at its peak creating a scenic landscape that looks like a postcard. October is a great month to explore St. Petersburg’s numerous art galleries and museums with fewer crowds. Another advantage of visiting during this month is that you can benefit from lower prices on hotels.
POZNAN, POLAND
I have been coming to Poznan every year for the past 13 years and what I love most about this city during October, is how beautiful it looks in Fall colors. The temperatures range from an average of 12 degrees during the first half of the month, to an average of 8 degrees during the second half. Don’t let the weather discourage you, however, for there are plenty of beautiful things to see in Poznan that are worthy of your attention. My favorite place to be in the city is Old Market Square. If you’re looking to dedicate a day to a shopping spree, then Poznan is the perfect place to do that, as it can offer a great number of shopping malls to choose from.

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
Prague has been voted the most beautiful city in the world and October is a great time to visit. The capital of the Czech Republic looks beautiful any time of the year but in October it looks like an autumn haven. The leaves turn into beautiful shades of yellow, red, orange, and brown making the city look even more magical. Get lost in the medieval, picturesque cobblestone streets, and if the temperature drops find refuge at one of the myriad cozy beer bars and restaurants.
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
We spent 3 days in Budapest and I left with the promise that I will return one day. I loved the city and I can’t recommend it enough, especially if you’re looking for a quick and affordable getaway. The weather in October can vary dramatically, so if you want to benefit from mild temperatures then I would suggest you visit during the beginning of the month. Budapest is a lively city with plenty of things to see. If you’re a foodie, then you’re in for a treat as in October is the annual Pálinka and Sausage Festival. Yum!
ICELAND
While Iceland is best visited during the summer, October comes with great advantage; your chances of seeing the Northern lights increase drastically during this month! Many visitors, especially photographers, will agree that Iceland is one of the best European countries to visit in October as the country looks splendid during the Fall season. The temperature is still pleasant, allowing you to explore Iceland’s dramatic landscape, take walks in nature and even go to the beach. No, of course not to swim, but you can’t miss your chance of seeing the Reynisfjara black beach during your visit; Iceland’s most famous beach.
