Looking back to 6 years ago when we moved to Malta, it used to be easier to find good coffee shops mainly in the touristy areas of the island; such as Valletta, Sliema, and St. Julian’s.

BEST COFFEE SHOPS IN MALTA – TOP 15 PLACES
JAVA
Java is located in Naxxar and it is not only one of the best coffee shops in Malta but also one of my favorite places for brunch. The indoor space is very cozy but chances are, you’re visiting Malta to enjoy the sun, so we’d suggest that sit outside and enjoy your coffee al fresco. Besides their delicious coffee, this cute coffee shop is the best place in Malta if you’re looking for a refreshing smoothie bowl. They’re super yummy!
BERTA BOUTIQUE CAFE
This beautiful coffee shop is located on a quiet residential street in Gharghur, Malta. The cafe is tiny but it packs a lot of history. Before BERTA opened, this was one of the oldest bars in Malta! The current owners have converted it into a beautiful space with a clean interior and exterior decor. The coffee is delicious and the service is also great! With that said, we’d highly recommend that you also try their unique artisan tea. If you’re looking to explore a part of the island that is less touristy, then this is definitely one of the best coffee shops in Malta to try out.
KASA KAFE
What you’ll love most about Kasa Kafe, is its unique decor; you’ll feel as if going to your best friend’s house for a coffee. The unique concept makes up for the indoor space which is a little bit limited. They serve excellent coffee; which is why we believe this is one of the best coffee shops in Malta, and a few snacks in case you get hungry. The cafe closes for a few hours during lunchtime, so be sure to check the timings before you go. This cute coffee shop is located in Mosta which is one of the largest neighborhoods in Malta.
COFFEE CIRCUS (MSIDA)
Coffee Circus is a franchise in Malta, with many shops scattered across the island. Our favorite, however, is the one located in Msida. Why? Because we love the entire vibe of the cafe (including the mix-and-match industrial decor), the people who work there are lovely and the coffee is one of the best in Malta! This is also one of the best coffee shops in Malta if you’re working remotely and you’re looking for a nice place to work from. Be sure to try their Freddo Espresso or Freddo Cappucino; an excellent cold brew to cool down from the Maltese heat.
MINT
There’s not one person in Malta that doesn’t know of Mint. Located at one of the busiest areas in Malta, this cute coffee shop is a safe bet if you’re going for a walk on the Sliema promenade and you need a quick coffee break to recharge your batteries. The food is also pretty awesome here so it really is a win-win! Mint, like most independent coffee shops in Malta, is rather small inside but the area expands outdoors, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding a table. You must try their cappuccino, is extraordinary!
CAFFE BERRY
Ah, just the thought of Caffe Berry makes my mouth water! This is quite honestly the tiniest coffee shop in Malta but we urge you to give it a chance because the barista makes the most epic coffees! It’s always busy, so most likely you’ll have to queue for your coffee but trust us, it is worth it 100%. Be sure to order the house specialty; the mouthwatering Berrycino. You can choose between two different flavors, Pistachio or Hazelnut. It is happiness in a cup! Once you try it, we’re sure you’ll understand our hype and why we’ve included it in this list of the best coffee shops in Malta.
CAROLINA’S CAFE
There are always 2 words that come instantly to mind whenever I think of Carolina’s Cafe, “Cuteness Overload”. Same as with Coffee Circus, this one too is a coffee chain, so they have shops in various locations in Malta. Our favorite, however, is the one in Balzan. We love that area and the cafe itself is located at the cutest little spot with views over the remarkable church of Balzan. The entire decor resembles a Parisian cafe of a bygone era, with pink and white colors dominating the decor. This is the ultimate spot and one of the best coffee shops in Malta if you’re looking to have a fabulous afternoon tea with your besties.
THE NEWPORT CAFE
The Newport Cafe has a beautiful nautical theme and one of its highlights – besides the great coffee – it’s the excellent location. Although Ta’Xbiex is frequently bypassed by many visitors, we’ve always favorited this small area as it seems that everything slows down here. Unlike the adjacent areas of Msida and Gzira, Ta’Xbiex is almost always quiet besides the few locals who choose the waters of this part of the promenade to swim. You can follow their lead and spend a few hours lounging on the rocks and when you’re ready for your caffeine dose, head over to The Newport Cafe for a pick-me-up espresso.
MARELLI CAFE
I’m not exaggerating when I say that I absolutely LOVE Marelli’s! If you’re looking for coffee shops in Malta that serve both great coffee and awesome brunch or breakfast, then you’ll find it at Marelli Cafe. Some of the dishes on the menu change daily or every few days, so there is not a chance that you’ll get bored of this place. Their coffees and juices are divine and the service is always fantastic. Marelli Cafe is located off-the-beaten-path, in Birkirkara so expect only locals here. They get very busy, especially during the weekend, so we’d suggest that you either visit during the weekdays or you avoid the hours during breakfast and brunch.
LOT SIXTY ONE
Okay, so you’re out and about in Valletta and you only have time for a quick coffee before you continue exploring the capital. LOT61 is where you want to be. Many locals swear that this cafe serves the best coffee in Malta and who are we to disagree. The cafe is super small with only a few barstools across the bar and a couple of tables outside but it’s the perfect place if you want to grab a takeaway coffee. This is arguably one of the best coffee shops in Malta.
KYOTO JAPANESE BAKERY
Don’t let the name mislead you, this beautiful coffee shop is named Kyoto Japanese Bakery not based on its decor but rather due to the delicious Japanese-inspired yummy sweets and delicious dishes. The reason why keep going back there, however, is no other than their amazing matcha-coffee. The cafe is super cozy and if you choose one of the seats close to the window, you can have a nice sea view. What’s more to ask? Keep in mind that while this is one of the best coffee shops in Malta to enjoy a nice cup of coffee, it’s not a good place if you’re looking for a cafe to work from.
U BISTROT
This place is the best coffee shop in Malta if you’re looking to sip your coffee al fresco with a great sea view. U Bistrot is located in St.Julian’s, right on the main street. The downside is that if you sit outside, it may get rather loud due to the traffic but if you’re like us and you enjoy sometimes a busy street where you can enjoy a hot cuppa while watching the passersby, then U Bistrot is a great choice. If you’d rather stay inside, the cafe has a lovely indoor space, decorated with flowers hanging from the ceiling which creates a warm and cozy vibe. Also great for pictures, if you’re looking for an Instagram-worthy cafe in Malta.
MANOUCHE CRAFT BAKERY & BISTRO
Manouche is mainly known in Malta for its glorious desserts. The quality is unbeatable and no matter which dessert you choose, they somehow guarantee to put a smile on your face. No better way to enjoy a splendid dessert than accompanied by a nice cup of coffee or tea, wouldn’t you agree? Manouche is also located in St. Julian’s and if you don’t mind walking a couple of minutes, you won’t have a problem finding parking. Be sure to try their phenomenal éclair!
EMMA’S KITCHEN
Much like Marelli’s, Emma’s Kitchen is primarily known for its awesome brunch in Malta. This cool coffee shop is situated in San Gwann, so if you’re a fan of places that are off-the-beaten-track, the drive there will totally be worth it. Because of its location, Emma’s Kitchen is mainly popular amongst the locals and it gets very busy. So be sure to book a table, especially if you’re visiting during the weekend. There is plenty of space indoor and outdoor so we’d recommend a nice table outside if the weather is warm and sunny.
CRUST
Crust is an awesome spot in Malta whether you’re looking for great coffee, brunch, or a nice dinner place. The location is fantastic, right in the middle of the bustling St.Julian’s so it’s perfect if you’re looking for a lively place to enjoy your coffee. In our opinion, the best time to visit is in the morning when you can order one of their delicious croissants or muffins with your coffee. Enjoy!
